THE GREAT WILLIE VARNER

ANYONE FROM WOODRUFF KNOWS THE LEGEND COACH WILLIE VARNER. HE WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST FOOTBALL LEGENDS OF ALL TIME. WITH A COACHING RESUME A MILE LONG, WITH ACCOMPLISHMENTS MOST COACHES ONLY DREAM OF MAKING. HE WAS A EDUCATOR,MENTOR,FATHER,GRANDFATHER,GREAT GRANDFATHER,LEGEND. IN 31 YEARS OF MY LIFE I'VE NOT KNOW TO MANY PEOPLE LIKE COACH VARNER. HE LOVED HIS PLAYERS AND STUDENTS. HE KNEW YOUR FAMILIES, KNEW WHERE YOU LIVED, AND WITH MANY IN THE WOODRUFF AREA COACHED FATHERS,SONS,BROTHERS & SISTERS. HE WAS THE TRUE DEFINITION OF WHAT A LEGEND SHOULD BE. A GREAT,WONDERFUL ROLE MODEL.

A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO, ME AND A FEW FELLOW WOODRUFF PEOPLE, HAD AN IDEA OF HONORING OUR LEGEND OF WOODRUFF,SC.  WE ARE WANTING TO HAVE HIGHWAY 146 (CROSS ANCHOR HWY) FROM THE RED LIGHT AT LITTLE CRICKET TO THE WOODRUFF ELEMENTARY, NAME W.L. VARNER BLVD, AND PAINTING MAROON & GOLD WOLVERINE HEADS FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH THE YEAR ABOVE IT, FOR ANY STATE CHAMPIONSHIP THE WOLVERINES WIN IN ANY SPORT, 16 OF WHICH WOULD BE ANOTHER WAY OF HONORING COACH VARNER. THIS IS THE LEAST A CITY & COMMUNITY COULD DO, TO HONOR A MAN WHO GAVE ALMOST 50 YEARS OF HIS LIFE TO WOODRUFF,SC.  HOW MUCH PRIDE WOULD IT GIVE ANYONE, THAT PLAYED FOR HIM, OR US AS FANS, TO PULL ONTO THAT STRETCH OF ROAD AND SEE W.L. VARNER BLVD, AND TO LET TEAMS VISITING WOODRUFF KNOW THAT THEY ARE IN THE HOME OF A LEGEND AND THE WOLVERINES.  I GO BACK TO WHEN I WAS A KID IN THE 80'S AND ON WED & THURS YOU COULD RIDE THROUGH WOODRUFF AND ALL THE STORE FRONTS ON MAIN STREET WHERE PAINTED WITH "GO WOLVERINES" OR "2,4,6,8, ALL THE WAY TO STATE". STORES WOULD HAVE FLASHING SIGNS SAYING "GO WOLVERINES". WE ALL AS A COMMUNITY CAN BAND TOGETHER AND GET THIS DONE. WE NEED ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET..

Toni Sloan (Coach Varners daughter

Keith Richardson (for WHS Assitant coach, and Legendary Clinton High School Coach.

He coached there for so long that he really became a legend and not just in Woodruff, but throughout the state and nationally," "You have heroes as you're growing up as a kid and then once you get into coaching you have heroes as well and he certainly was a hero of mine and for many other coaches in South Carolina."

Doc Davis (Former Chapman & Spartanburh High head coach)

"I'd have to put him up there among the finest coaches ever in South Carolina," "He would work hard, he was dedicated. I can't say enough good about him, to tell you the truth.

John McKissick (Legendary Summerville High School head coach)

"When we recruited (quarterback) Tony Rice, what became obvious about Coach Varner was, not only were his teams well coached and there was a loyalty that the players had, but equally important was that Coach Varner cared about his players,""The relationship he had with his players and the respect that he demanded from them toward the authority of coaches, all those things weigh heavily into the success that an individual will have on the college level. We will miss people like Coach Varner."

Lou Holts (Former Notre Dame & South Carolina head coach)

"He was such an inspiration to me as a player that I wanted to coach," "He had a lot of players who followed in his path because of his inspiration, how he handled himself and because he was tough."

Bobby Ivey (former player & member of 56 & 57 State Championship teams & Laurens & Northwestern head coach

"He was a great coach and, more importantly, he cared about you as an individual. He was always there for you," "They ought to name the town after him after all he's done for the community."

Tony Rice (former player & member of the 83 & 84 State Championship teams & Quarterback for the 1989 National Champion Notre Dame Fighting Irish

“He spent a large portion of his life here, so it’s fitting,”“Whenever people think about Coach Varner through the years, this is what they are going to associate him with — this stadium and this football field.”

Derek Jones (former player & member of 1991 Upperstate Championship team & asst. coach At Duke)

“Coach Varner, we salute you and respectively thank you for your many contributions to education, athletics and to our community for more than 50 years.”

Milton Smith (public address anouncer for Wolverine football)

“He was a staple of the community for so many years. He was woven into the community of Woodruff, and he touched a lot of lives,”“You grow up in this area, and you hear about Woodruff and Willie Varner. You couldn’t say one of those names without saying the other.”

Brian Lane (Head Coach of the Wolverines)

“The record books and statistics will show a tremendous amount of successes on the field, but one of the things I’m always struck with is that so much of what Coach Varner did is not measurable,” “From the physical amount of time he spent at the school, the relationships he formed with people, the amount of life lessons he taught to young people who in turn shared those with the next generation.

Scott Lawson (Woodruff Athletic director
